Greater Bamako's expansion toward Kalabancoro and Kati
Kalabancoro and Kati, communes of the Kati cercle, absorb a growing share of greater Bamako's urban growth. Population figures, distances, and urbanization trends.
Greater Bamako does not stop at the District's boundaries. Since the 2000s, the agglomeration's population growth has increasingly shifted toward neighboring communes that are administratively part of the **Kati cercle** (Koulikoro region), particularly **Kalabancoro** and the town of **Kati**.
## Kalabancoro, a rural commune turned urban suburb
Kalabancoro (also spelled Kalaban Coro) is a rural commune of the Kati cercle, located on the south bank of the Niger River, south and west of Bamako's urban Communes V and VI. Its population growth has been remarkably fast: from **35,582 residents in 1998** to **166,722 at the 2009 census**, making it Mali's third most populous commune and by far its most populous rural one. This expansion shows how Bamako's periphery is absorbing urbanization that the more land-constrained District can no longer fully accommodate.
## Kati, a garrison town at the capital's doorstep
The town of Kati, seat of the cercle of the same name, sits roughly **16 km northwest of Bamako's Independence Monument**, along national road RN3 linking Bamako to Nioro and Mauritania. The Kati cercle as a whole has the geographic peculiarity of **entirely surrounding the District of Bamako**. Kati is best known for hosting one of the country's largest military camps, giving it an outsized role in Malian political and institutional life.
## Urbanization that outgrows administrative borders
Neither Kalabancoro nor Kati is currently part of the District of Bamako in the strict administrative sense — both belong to the Kati cercle and the Koulikoro region. In practice, though, these communes function as extensions of the Bamako agglomeration: daily commuting flows into the District, continuous built-up areas, and markets and transport shared with Bamako's peripheral communes (notably Communes V and VI). Territorial reform proposals raised by the authorities envision turning Kati and Kalabancoro into arrondissements of the District of Bamako, but this change had not yet taken effect as of this article's publication.
